Winter Show
November 19 - 20, 2011

The Vancouver Poultry & Fancy Pigeon Association held its’ annual winter show in conjunction with the CPFA District 6 meet November 19 & 20, 2011 at the Ag-Rec Building on the Abbotsford fairgrounds. We are fortunate to have access to this building, as it offers excellent floor space, lighting, heating, parking, and easy access for our equipment.

We were grateful to have Ken Chatwin healthy and recovered from his open heart surgery, as his company, Compass Cladding, once again sponsored the exhibitor’s reception on Friday evening, which is always well attended. In addition to our exhibitor’s attend, we were also fortunate to have fanciers attend from out of town. What’s special about this, is that these fanciers were not able to show with us and choose to attend at our invitation due to the success of Ken and Elaine Chatwin hosting this reception. Many thanks to all that attended, and to Compass Cladding for once again sponsoring this unique event.

Our entries were down significantly this year, as exhibitors choose to support fewer shows this year. I attribute this to the economy, the proximity of so many shows in our area that are available for exhibitors to attend from October to December. I also attribute our lower entries due to the breeding season we had here, as it was a late start due the weather.

The low entries did not stop the spirit of the show, as we were fortunate to have John DeCarlo Jr judge the show. John did an excellent job, as everyone was impressed with his knowledge and calibre of judging. Thanks to Ernie Silveri for making the arrangements for John to judge, and special thanks to Doug Roberts for taking care of the travel arrangements for John to get to the show from the airport, and returning John to the airport.

Nice to see Bob Jones again this year representing the CPFA. Bob is always kept busy with band sales, hopefully he had a chance to enjoy the show. It was also nice to Dave Williamson attend our show and manage our raffle. Dave is also recovering from open heart surgery, and is well on his way to a full recovery. Dave is always amazed at the generosity of our exhibitors in participating in the show raffle, as this is a major source of income for our show. We are thankful to all those who purchased raffle tickets, and especially grateful to all those who provided donations.

Champion Fancy Pigeon and Champion Young Fancy Pigeon was awarded to Ernie Silveri for his American Roller (same bird). Champion Flying Pigeon and Champion Young Flying Pigeon was awarded to Ken Chatwin for his Show Type Homers. It is hard to compete with Ernie and Ken, as they are experienced showmen who know how to breed and show exceptional pigeons.

We once again are providing best of breed commemorative certificates, which will include a photo of the winning bird. These certificates are also once again being compiled by Bob Jones, thanks Bob!

I would like to thank the many volunteers who helped with the show setup and tear down, This was especially important this year due to the health of two directors who were recovering from open heart surgery. Many thanks to Dennis Boulet of Tri-West Feeds and Dave Naylor, representing Baden Feeds, for donating feed for our show.
