Show Report
Winter Show
November 19 - 20, 2010
The George Van Vliet Memorial Classic was hosted by The Vancouver Poultry & Fancy Pigeon Association November 19 & 20, 2010. The show committee was grateful for the support shown by members and exhibitors by honouring George’s memory with a great show..
The show was once again held at the Ag-Rec building in Abbotsford, well known for it’s excellent lighting and building facilities. The show committee was also grateful to have Compass Cladding host the exhibitor’s reception on the Friday evening. The reception this year was especially memorable as we had in attendance the family of George Van Vliet: Dina (wife), sons Cliff and Randall, daughter Crystal and many other family members.
Ken Chatwin presented Dina with a flower arrangement on behalf of our members. Barry Sky coordinated and provided a story board of photos of events George had participated in while involved with our club. Thanks to both for making the exhibitor’s reception memorable for George’s family.
Our show had 510 entries. I would like to thank everyone who participated this year, and especially those who had to travel to get here. I know the road conditions were not the best driving from Alberta and the interior of BC.
Our judges this year were:
- Mike Cobb, Los Angeles, CA (Fancy and Rare Breeds)
- Bob Sutherland, Marysville, WA (Doves, Fancy Pigeons, Rollers)
- Roger Hansen, Marysville, WA (Fancy Pigeons)
- Max Nelson, Puyallup, WA (Show Type and Racing Homers)
In addition to our annual trophies awarded for fancy, flying and junior entries, we also provided best of breed commemorative certificates, which included the breed photo and a photo of George Van Vliet. Many thanks to Dave Williamson for assisting Barry Sky with taking the breed photos. As you can imagine, this was an all day process.
I would also like to thank the many volunteers who helped with the show setup and tear down, something that George had always participated in. Thanks to Tri-West Feeds for donating feed for our show, and to Ken Chatwin for donating the shavings to our show.
Our raffle and silent auction was extremely successful this year due the generous donations from all members, and to all who purchased raffle tickets with our new pricing structure. Dave Williamson, raffle coordinator, thanks you. Nice to see Bob Jones attend our show, representing the CPFA.
