Winter Show Nov. 17 - 19, 2006 - Show Report
After many months of planning, the CPFA Annual Classic and Western Canadian National Show for 2006 finally arrived in Abbotsford Nov. 17-19. Hosted by the Vancouver Poultry and Fancy Pigeon Association, the show was a great success. We had exhibitors travel from Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Washington State and all across our province of BC, showing pigeons, poultry and waterfowl in the first ever CPFA Classic on the west coast.
Our show hall was well laid out, thanks to the planning of our property manager, Ken Chatwin. The building was full of activity, birds and exhibitors. We were also fortunate to have the Mountain Pacific Racing Homer Club host their annual show and auction with us again this year. Our directors were pleased to offer such a variety of poultry, waterfowl, fancy and flying pigeons to the exhibitors and public, making it an enjoyable show to attend.
Our exhibitors’ reception was well attended on the Friday evening. Many thanks to our sponsor, Ken Chatwin and partners of Compass Cladding, for providing the food and beverage. Ken’s smoked salmon proved to be popular again this year, as it did not last long.
The awards banquet was held upstairs above the show hall. Thanks to Murray McAllister for coordinating the caterer, to Dave Williamson for coordinating the wine provided by the club, and to Tracy Morrison for taking care of our bar service. The evening was enjoyed by everyone, as awards were presented, photographs were taken and souvenirs were handed out. John Taupert, CPFA President, offered a few comments to those in attendance, and encouraged us to attend the CPFA Classic for 2007 to be held in Montreal.
Our specialty club coordinators did a great job with their meets. Special thanks to our judges: John Taupert judging the fantail meet, Willie Halpern judging the American Show Racer Meet, Mike Lopez judging the Rare Breeds, Myron Berger looking after the flying section, Dennis Manning judging the fancy breeds, and Ken Cooke judging the poultry and waterfowl section.
The finals for judging the Super Grand Champion Pigeon of the Show were handled by Dennis, Myron and Mike. Congratulations to Ken Chatwin for winning this award with a Young Hen Show Type Homer. Additional congratulations to Keith Aldridge for Champion Fancy Pigeon with a Young Cock Norwich Cropper, to Guido Piffner for Champion Rare Pigeon with a Luzerner Gold Old Hen, to C-R Ducks for Champion Poultry with a Black Cochin Bantam Hen, and to Richard Verheyden for Champion Waterfowl with a White Call Bantam Old Drake.
The photos provided in this issue were courtesy of Gary Owen, who graciously accepted that task of takings pictures of all our award champions, including the best of breed winners.
Finally, thanks to the show committee for volunteering their time to host such a classic national show, thanks to all our sponsors, members and exhibitors for their donations, and to our President, Ernie Silveri, whose fund raising efforts continues to help us ensure that our show and our club survives year after year.
