Show Report
Winter Show
November 9 - 11, 2012
By the time this article is published the holiday season will be over. I hope you enjoyed the Christmas holiday and had a chance to spend it with friends and family, as I did.
I did spend some of the Christmas season finalizing the show report for our 2012 Western Canadian National Show, held this past November in Abbotsford, BC.
I am grateful for all who supported our show this year, it was bigger and better than we had anticipated. I would like to thank the executive of The Vancouver Poultry and Fancy Pigeon Association for working diligently all year to ensure this show was successful.
Entries for the show were 839, (42 breeds) from 42 exhibitors. These numbers were unexpected, as most shows seem to be getting smaller each year. Needless to say, we were pleased to see such a large entry. Many thanks to those exhibitors who travelled to attend our show, as we had exhibitors from Alberta, interior of BC, Vancouver Island and Washington State. As you know, showing birds across the border is not that easy, due to the paper work required by both the US and Canadian governments. Thanks to Dan Crossman for coordinating this on the US side and bringing the birds up to our show. Special thanks to Ken Chatwin for housing the US birds for a few days before they could be returned to the US, due to our national holiday.
The show started Friday evening, Nov. 9 with an exhibitor’s reception, once again hosted by Ken Chatwin and his business (Compass Cladding). This has become a tradition at our shows, as many exhibitors and guests look forward to this annual event.
Saturday was quite busy, as we wanted to get the judging complete in time for the awards banquet that evening. Thanks to our judges, John De Carlo Jr, Ralph Whitson, Dennis Manning and Bob Sutherland for working diligently all day to complete the judging.
Dave Williamson was busy Saturday managing the raffle, which always is a crowd pleaser. We had many items donated for the raffle, with the monies going towards our show expenses. Thanks to Elaine Chatwin for donating one of her art pieces, which was part of our silent auction fundraiser for the show.
Givo Hassko coordinated and managed our first ever bird auction. This was well supported by exhibitors who donated birds to the auction, as proceeds from the auction went towards our show expenses. There were many who attended the auction, which made this first time event quite successful.
Many thanks to Bob Jones, CPFA Band Secretary, for attending our show and promoting the CPFA. Thanks again to our show photographer, Mike Krochter, who once again donated this time to photograph all the award winners.
Congratulations to Double V Lofts for winning Grand Champion Fancy Pigeon, to Ken Chatwin for winning Grand Champion Flying Pigeon, to Double V Lofts for winning Champion Rare Pigeon, to Terry Arruda for winning Champion Ring Neck Dove and to Falon Lancey for winning Champion Pigeon by a Junior.
All exhibitors will receive their show report by mail. All best of breed winners and award winners will receive their commemorative colour certificates also by mail.
Thanks again to all who supported our show. If you are going to the NPA Grand National in Vancouver, WA, I look forward to seeing you there.
